Hurricane Irma continues to strengthen as it achieved hurricane status this morning. The system remains well developed with a solid inner core. Motion is to the west and will remain so for the next several days and may even move south of west over time. The threat to the Leeward Islands will depend on how much of a southward component of motion and the strong building ridge to the north and northwest of the hurricane. Gradual strengthening continues next several days, Irma will be a major hurricane over the weekend. The long range threat to the United States remains highly uncertain.

We are seeing some beautiful spring weather in the eastern US this week especially the next 2 days with highs in the 70s to near 80 around NYC and PHL. Storms continue to pound the west coast. A look ahead to the next 10 days to 2 weeks.

The persistent jet stream and trough in the east is making for a beautiful Sunday of weather across much of the Northeast & Middle Atlantic States. Tropical Storm Dora forms of the Mexico South coast on the Pacific side. No threat to land. The west particularly the southwest is hot (as usual). 2 confirmed tornadoes in New Jersey yesterday.

A spring snow storm is producing one foot plus heavy wet snows for interior central and northern New England and parts of upstate NY. 1 foot or more in elevation driven snows. Vigorous low pressure in the Southeast US is producing heavy rains thunderstorms and flooding over parts of the Southeast and Southern Middle Atlantic States. The system will move up the coast tonight and Tuesday producing 1 to 2 inch rains for much of the Northeast mainly for areas closer to the coast. In the west stormy conditions continue and spreads to all of the Rockies later this week Significant snows likely for Central & Southern Rockies.

Harvey has produced 2 feet or more of rain overnight. Some places receiving 10 inches of rain in an hour. Rain continues for the next several days though weather models do seem to drift Harvey southeastward and back out over the Gulf of Mexico by early Monday morning.
